"The Best Years of My Life" by Horslips really is one of my very favorite songs ever. It's one of the few things that reminds me of the good things about growing up in Northern Ireland. That band has been tragically overlooked by rock history.

Yay, some one else who knows Horslips. I love them to bits and no one else has ever seemed to be aware of their existence

"Aliens" was the first album I ever bought at the tender age of nine, after which I saved up and got "The Tain". I've spent a lot of time in punk/goth/industrial waters, but Horslips albums still spend a lot of time on my turntable. (Those are the same copies I bought back then, along with most of the rest of their releases.)

I met them when I was 16, when they played Woods nightclub in Plymouth on the Book of Invasions tour. The band I was in played mostly original material, but we had been doing Horslips covers for at least a year by then. We often finished up our set with a mad extended version of King of the Fairies, and a few places had got trashed during it.

We were determined to meet them, and stayed behind after the gig. Our fiddle player had taken his fiddle along, collared Charles O'Connor as soon as the gig ended, and the two of them sat on the front of the stage deep in conversation. I remember standing at the bar chatting with Barry Devlin (who couldn't believe there were English kids our age who idolised them) when Jim Lockheart came over shaking his head and said something like "That kid is amazing. He knows tunes that Charles has never heard".

They are really nice guys, and I'd love to see them play again.
